Darkness

I suppose we’re not all that alike,
You and I.
But would you teach me how to be?
I have never once seen you cry
Before the lights.
Would you show me how to find my peace?

I suppose most don’t turn to you for company,
Dear Darkness,
Except perhaps a lonely flame
Flickering, tiny and afraid.

And I suppose most don’t call you their friend
When all you do is conceal
Everything that might invoke fear.

I suppose most don’t consider you a good judge
Of character,
For you only make the smallest, loneliest lights
Seem beautiful.

And I know I don’t know you
Like I think I do.
But I suppose it is your nature to conceal
All you feel
And all you are,
Just so the distant stars
Can shine.
Would you show me how to
Make someone shine
Without having to turn to light?

I suppose you’re not what most yearn to be,
Dear Darkness,
But would you teach me your ways?
And I suppose most don’t turn to you to lead them,
Dear Darkness,
But could you take my hand today?
